I love homeopathy! I believe it is capable of actually curing disease instead of approaching the body as separate body parts and suppressing disease deeper within. Homeopathy takes the totality of the person, both physically and emotionally, into consideration … and that just makes so much sense! Doesn’t it?
t makes sense because you all intrinsically DO know deep inside that the body heals itself by getting rid of “stuff” (toxins). It makes good sense to look at the underlying issues instead of a short-sided approach of just looking at the symptoms.
It just makes sense, if you just take a moment to really think about it, that a medical drug, which is a toxin, logically has to do more harm than good in the long run. How can something toxic to your body possibly heal you?
The public is simply so used to TV and radio advertisements about various drugs, even though nowadays, especially in the USA, they also provide a long list of side effects. How can that possibly result in cure or healing?
Homeopathic medicines have been around longer than pharmaceutical medications, which have really only been the system of choice since the American Revolution.
Over 6,500 patients took part in a study at the Bristol Homeopathic Hospital. Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine on November 20, 2005, over 70% of patients with chronic diseases reported positive health changes after homeopathic treatment. A large variety of chronic diseases were included, such as eczema, asthma, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, menopause, depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The highest improvements were seen in children (89% of asthma patients and 68% of eczema patients under 16).
Homeopathic medicines promote health and harmony of body, mind, and spirit through natural therapies. Through individualized treatment plans, homeopathic healthcare helps your body heal itself from illness.
YOU are the only one who can do the healing for you, and we will educate and support you in this process. Your goals are to address the underlying causes of diseases and to empower yourself in discovering what works best for you in healing and disease prevention.
In my series of blogs, I will focus on ACUTE remedies vs. chronic. Acute homeopathic prescribing is that part of homeopathy that treats illness which has an abrupt onset and needs immediate attention. In homeopathic medicine, acute refers primarily to the speed of onset and self-limiting character of the disorder rather than its seriousness. Colds, influenza, sore throats, insect stings, cuts, bruises, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, and short-term insomnia are all examples of conditions that are treated by acute prescribing.
ARNICA Montana (plant: leopard's bane, a mountain daisy)
Arnica is often referred to as the SPORTS remedy as it helps amazingly in sports trauma when there is a typical sore & bruised feeling with an accompanying feel "that a truck drove over me",
Arnica is indicated in any blunt trauma where the skin is not opened (use Calendula (more in next blog) when the skin is broken and will heal faster).
Arnica is specifically helpful in:
bruising - absorbing blood under the skin (hematoma)
indicated in trauma after childbirth
for over lifting (eg moving furniture, working in the yard)
overexertion of muscles (eg when you haven't used them for a while)
accidents causing shock
it should also be given to any acute STROKE victim as it absorbs internal bleeding very quickly.
it can also be used as a FLU remedy when that Sore, Bruised feeling is present
Contact your Homeopath for guidance and for remedies in the indicated potency. I am a Registered Homeopath myself and I will be available for acute consultations and be selling Emergency Remedy kits from my website.
Therapeutic effects of Essential Oils
Did you realize Essential Oils (those that have therapeutic effects and are pure) can help you with your #Hormones ? Whether you suffer from #sleepdeprivation or #hotflashes, to #thyroid problems, there are oils that can help balance.
The cool thing about using essential oils is that you can not overdose. If e.g. you experience #estrogen dominance, which is an imbalance between your #estrogen and #progesterone ration, the oils or oil blends will only "top up" the one you are deficient in.
I personally choose to use YOUNG LIVING and have since the 80's. Did you realize Essential Oils (those that have therapeutic effects and are pure) can help you with your #Hormones ? Whether you suffer from #sleepdeprivation or #hotflashes, to #thyroid problems, there are oils that can help balance.
In this Blog today I want to discuss the THYROID and how essential oils can help. Lets start with a bit of medical explanation. The thyroid secretes hormones (mainly thyroxin) under the direction of the pituitary gland and affect METABOLISM.
Most well know is HYPO thyroidism (underactive thyroid) associated fatigue, depression, possible hair loss, COLD intolerance, irritability and decreased libido.
Besides hypothyroidism a GOITER can sometimes cause HYPER THYROIDISM (overactive thyroid. First of course have it checked out by a doctor. Often associated with lack of IODINE. If you have been diagnosed with a Goiter please test for Iodine through your ND (Naturopathic Doctor). BTW iodine insufficiency can be cause by eg by FLUORIDE and chlorine from public water and fluoride in toothpaste (YL has some amazing fluoride-freetoothpastes).
Hyperthyroid and causes anxiety, insomnia and arthritis. ENDOFLEX and MYRHH can also help with hyperthyroid; isn't the body amazing? It uses the oils where needed.
Remember that your THYROID is part of your endocrine system and if out of balance, can affect your other hormones. Consider taking the D.U.T.C.H. test )Dried Urine Test with your ND first to understand where all your sexy hormones are at. Then you can re-test at some point to see if the treatment course you have chosen is working.
CANCER: Natural Approaches
“For most people, cancer comes NOT from pre-programmed genes, but from conditions and exposures that are encountered throughout their life.” Devra Lee Davis
Is It Possible to Prevent Cancer?
Yes, it is possible. Not by swallowing pharmaceutical drugs and chemicals though. A safer alternative is looking at lifestyle changes. The American Cancer Society suggests you can reduce your risk of cancer by 62% with simple lifestyle changes.
Can cancer be prevented? (from CCS website)
About 4 in 10 cancer cases can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the health of Canadians. The good news is you can reduce your risk of cancer right now. There’s no time like the present to start making positive lifestyle changes to feel better and live longer.
Reduce or eliminate processed foods, sugar, and grain carbohydrate intake.
Eat organic foods when possible.
Control your insulin levels.
Balance omega-3 and omega-6 oils by supplementing with good quality oil.
Get regular exercise (it drives your insulin levels down) and keep your body weight in control.
Regulate your Vitamin D intake by getting plenty of sunlight exposure (Have a simple blood test at your doctor’s office to get your levels checked).
Get regular good sleep.
Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins, such as in cleaning products and personal care products, as well as your exposure to pesticides
Ensure adequate air quality.
Limit your exposure to and provide protection for yourself from information-carrying radio waves produced by cell phone towers, base stations, phones and Wi-Fi stations.
Avoid fried and charbroiled food; instead, eat a diet high in fiber.
Work on your emotional health and balance. Even the CDC states that 85% of disease is caused by your emotions.
Eat an 80% vegetarian diet with lots of raw food.
STOP smoking! Stop drinking pop!!
Detoxify the body on a regular basis, and reduce stress.
Last, but not least, investigate safe screening techniques, such as Thermography and the estronex 2/16 urine test for breast cancer risk assessment.
Carl C. Pfeiffer, MD, PhD "For every drug that benefits a patient, there is a natural substance that can achieve the same effect." — Pfeiffer's Law
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. The Truly Healthy environment is not merely safe but stimulating. Environmental Science and Technology, February 1968.
Environment: the aggregate of surrounding things, conditions, or influences; surroundings; milieu.
Ecology: the air, water, minerals, organisms, and all other external factors surrounding and affecting a given organism at any time - the social and cultural forces that shape the life of a person or a population.
Do you think your environment affects your hormones? There is a lot more media and information now about the effects of chemicals in your food, water, and household goods. Specifically, estrogen-mimicking chemicals are of concern to us in dealing with breast health. Indeed, the chemical environment affects your cells and your hormones.
Each year, an additional 1,000 new chemicals are developed and introduced into your environment.
Household Cleaning Products
Many household products contain formaldehyde, chlorides, reproductive toxins, or hormone disruptors, which can cause liver, kidney, and brain damage, allergies and asthma. Hormone disrupting parabens may be used as preservatives.
EWG is a good source to educate yourself on Healthy Cleaning products.
Slowly start replacing your eg. Windex with a GREEN choice without chemicals. Look up the best choices on EWG.
Personally I choose and recommend highly the Young Living line of THIEVES. Just Love Love Love the smell of thieves oil in my YL diffuser (no heat). I buy their household Thieves cleaner and dilute it for general cleaning. You can even make a solution for e.g. carpet cleaning. Another thieves product very relevant right now is their hand sanitizer; a better choice than all these commercial sanitizers full of chemicals.
BTW, Young Living's Thieves® essential oil blend was inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated and wore a special aromatic combination of clove, rosemary, vinegar, and other botanicals that they believed provided protection while they were stealing.
"Thieves oil is a blend of cinnamon, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, and lemon oils that has been shown in university studies to obliterate bacteria and viruses, as well as mold . . ..”
Natural Household Alternatives
Use these healthier, alternative, cleaning products in your home:
White Vinegar - disinfects and deodorizes
Lemon Juice - cuts grease & polishes metal
Washing Soda - general cleaning and deodorizing
Borax - kills mold
Olive oil - mix with vinegar for furniture polish
Alka-Seltzer – cleans toilets
Club Soda and Salt: removes carpet stains. You can also try a three-to-one mixture of vinegar and water and pouring the mixture onto the stains
“Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to health.
The diseases we are beginning to see as the major causes of death in the latter part of (the 1900's) and into the 21st century are diseases of chemical origin.”
Dr. Dick Irwin, Toxicologist, Texas A&M University
Lifestyle & Health Education
Health is a result of educating yourself, to take responsibility for your body and mind, and to make educated lifestyle choices. You need to learn to look at prevention as a form of cure. Discovering that you are part of the decision-making process is very empowering.
The Role of Diet and Nutrition
It seems far-fetched to many people that what you eat can affect your health. However, If you eat the regular (non-organic) food supply, you are basically feeding yourselves a nutrient-poor and pesticide-rich diet.
Many of these pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals affect your hormonal balance and, therefore. your breast and overall health.
You definitely ARE what you EAT (and drink).
Prevention through Diet
Your goal is to consume “clean” (organic) food and water in its most natural form (raw). Cooked food loses most of the nutrients needed when cooked over 105 degrees Celsius.
You should strive to eat and drink 80% alkaline and 20% acidic foods and water, as you may know, that cancer can’t thrive in an alkaline environment.
In summary, your goal is to:
Consume organic food
Eat 80% of your food uncooked, or raw
Avoid processed foods
Avoid Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
Eliminate hydrogenated fats
Decrease, or avoid, sugar
Strive for a balance of 80% alkaline and 20% acidic foods
1. Choose Organic Foods
Certain herbicides and pesticides on produce, as well as hormones found in conventional meats, are implicated in cancer. Eat more raw and organic vegetables from the Brassica family: broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, and collard greens especially for breast health. The plant compounds they contain make estrogen less dangerous to breast tissue. Choose to eat them raw, when possible, to preserve nutrients.
NOTE: In their phenomenal bestseller, Foods That Fight Cancer: Preventing Cancer Through Diet, written by Montreal biochemist, Richard Beliveau, with fellow scientist Denis Gingras, the authors refer to fruits and vegetables as a preventative non-toxic version of chemotherapy.
2. Avoid Processed Foods
Refined carbohydrates, processed meats (hot dogs, sausage, etc) are proven to increase cancer risk. Processed foods include anything in a box or package that doesn't look like it just came from a farm!
Processed foods contain saturated fats, trans fats, refined carbohydrates, and preservatives, which actually increase inflammation throughout your body. Many processed foods contain white flour - be sure to avoid white flour, white rice and white breads.
Eating processed foods has been proven to raise cancer risk in women, such as breast cancer, pancreatic, urinary tract and uterine cancer.
Replace luncheon meats with home-roasted organic meats. Roast a local, organic chicken once a week, and have chicken salad, roasted chicken sandwiches, and chicken soup for lunch instead of processed luncheon meats. A few times a week, choose to eat a vegetarian salad or sandwich.
3. Avoid GMO's
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) use a laboratory process of artificially inserting genes into the DNA of food crops. These genes are obtained from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals, or even humans.
At present, in North America, no label is required to identify a GMO product; however, some products may have “non-GMO” labels.
GMO food is labeled or banned in: Europe, Japan, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Peru, and many other countries, however, not yet in North America.
Most genetically modified ingredients are products made from the Big Four:
Corn: corn flour, meal, oil, starch, gluten and syrup, fructose, dextrose, glucose, and modified cornstarch
Soybeans: soy flour, lecithin, protein, isolate, and vegetable oil
Canola: oil (aka rapeseed oil)
GMO Agriculture Is the Opposite of Sustainable
Chances are you are already eating genetically engineered ingredients. Look at the labels on any of your packaged foods.
Very few fresh fruits and vegetables are GMOs (only papaya from Hawaii).
Look for wild fish, rather than farmed.
Some eggs are GMOs. Stick with organic eggs.
Cereals and breakfast bars are very likely to include genetically modified ingredients, including soy and corn products.
Many packaged breads and bakery items contain genetically modified ingredients, such as corn syrup.
Many frozen foods are highly processed. Look for organic or non-GMO labels.
Many soups and sauces are highly processed.
Choose pure organic olive and coconut oils. Choose preserves, jams and jellies made with raw cane sugar, not corn syrup.
Most juices, except papaya, are made from GMO-free fruit; however; the use of high fructose corn syrup in fruit juices is cause for concern. Many sodas and fruit beverages are mostly comprised of water and corn syrup. Look for 100% organic juice blends.
Dr. David Suzuki, noted Canadian environmentalist, and hundreds of other scientists have warned about the dangers of GMOs and their effects, not only on human health, but also on biodiversity. Our bees are dying, and as Einstein has stated,
“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe,
then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”
The health of our pets is often a large concern for pet owners when it comes to vet visits and bills. Improving OUR lifestyle and environment may help in improving the health of our pets.
Holistic pet care means to take a more “natural” and “common sense” approach to your pet's health care while taking into account the whole animal, as in the mind, body, and spirit.
As a Homeopath I was introduced at Homeopathic College to Holistic Pet Health and I have found many people will choose natural approaches for their pet more passionately than for themselves.
I learned about especially their FOOD and experienced first hand with my Jack Russell Terrier Tessa who had seemed bored with the same food everyday that variety and added vegetables, eggs, rice barley got her excited again about eating. I also learned that its worth investing in a good Organic Natural brand of dog and cat food. Keeping out pets healthy this way, lowers our vet bills so well worth it.
I often use first Homeopathy for acute ailments and also learned that Young Living Essential oils has various OILS for pet health including eg PET CARE & INNER BALANCE(for emotional health), ANIMAL SCENTS shampoo and PET FRESH to help support healthy recovery of irritated coat and skin, while guarding against harmful contaminants.
With Homeopathy i have helped dogs, cats, horses and yes, even a parrot.
Keeping your pet's teeth and gums healthy requires a commitment on your part. Special "tartar control" diets or treats are not enough. Bacteria are always present in the mouth, and within hours of a professional cleaning, they are already hard at work creating plaque, a sticky deposit on the teeth. In just 24 hours, the plaque starts to harden into tartar (calculus). Daily tooth brushing and regular veterinary checkups are essential. Your vet can help you choose products and give you instructions on how to brush, along with tips for getting pets to accept the treatment. If possible find a Holistic Vet. One Vet you can follow on-line works with Dr. Mercola. Her name is Karen Becker.
Thermography & Breast Health
Medical Breast Thermography is an FDA-approved (as an adjunct modality) assessment tool that is simple, painless, and uses no radiation.
When Thermography is added to a multi-modal approach of breast exams, namely self-examination, examination by a doctor, and structural testing, 95% of early stage cancers can be detected.
Medical Breast Thermography
What’s more is that thermography is an early risk assessment of breast health.
Breast thermography measures infrared radiation, in other words the heat or inflammation, which is constantly radiating, or emitting, away from the surface of the human skin. The infrared images show subtle temperature changes in the breast tissue.
Blood supply, or vascularity, appears hyperthermic, or hot, and is depicted in thermographic images as red or white in color. Hypothermic, or cold, areas are depicted as darker, cooler colors in thermographic images. Normal breast tissue is displayed in varying shades. It's about SYMMETRY.
Thermography is the most reliable form of early assessment. Though it is not often used in the medical field, it is becoming more readily available. Thermography has 90% sensitivity for both false positive and false negative readings.
Thermography is painless and offers a view of the entire chest and underarm area. Nearly 50% of tumors are found in the upper chest or underarm areas - areas that mammograms don’t cover.
Furthermore, thermography is an objective method to evaluate if therapies or lifestyle changes are actually working to reduce risk. For example, many women today use bio-identical hormones, which can be very beneficial. However, not all women react the same way to these treatments and thermography provides a way of measuring the results of treatment.
Thermography is a safe and effective exam for indicating:
· Inflammatory breast cancer
· Hormonal influence on the breast tissue
· Fibrocystic activity or conditions
· Thyroid-related conditions
· Monitoring of hormone replacement therapy
· Undetected dental inflammation and TMJ issues
· Vascular disease
Hormonal Health is key in breast health and in overall health. Many women only find that out when they are diagnosed with breast cancer, at which point their tissue is tested for hormone levels. Eighty-Five percent (85%) of diagnosed breast cancers are estrogen dominant: 85%!
The reason your hormones are tested at the time of cancer is that the medical system now has a drug (like Tamoxifen) they can prescribe.
Why do they not test for hormones earlier in life, you ask? Well, preventatively speaking, they have no measures or drugs for the management of hormones. Now, however, more and more trained medical doctors specialize in the testing of hormones and use of bio-identical hormones.
Intuitively, many women realize how much hormones control their lives. From young teens, you experience the effects of hormones in sexual development, resulting in bodily changes. Most women understand hormones have something to do with teenage mood swings and menstrual symptoms. And you realize hormonal influences again going into pregnancy and menopause. Hormones control us from beginning to end, it seems. Therefore, breast health = hormone health, and vice versa.
When a woman’s (and teenagers!!) hormones are in proper balance, she feels great and has none of the symptoms she takes for granted during her menstrual cycles and in menopause.
As mentioned before, 85% of breast cancers are diagnosed as estrogen dominant. What does this mean?
In many cases, it means either too much estrogen (mostly estradiol) in your body or too little progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone work as a team and, therefore, the quotient percentage between them is very important to know and understand.
Estrogen dominance puts a woman at greater risk for breast cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, low sex drive, and ovarian cysts.
What is wrong with us, you ask, where so many women have too much estrogen in their body? Is it just your body malfunctioning, and if so, why? Many environmental factors influence and affect your hormones (hormone mimickers), such as cosmetics, plastics, water, dairy products, red meat, chicken, and pesticides. Synthetic estrogens found in birth control pills and fertility drugs contribute to estrogen overload.
I suggest working with a N.D (Naturopathic Doctor) trained and experienced in Hormones / Women's Health or a M.D. trained and specialized in Hormones Naturally (there are not many). Ask to do the D.U.T.C.H. urine spot test and find out where your "sexy hormones" are at and then create a treatment plan
Breast Thermography is also a tool which can show Estrogen dominance patterns in your breast. Remember, Prevention is the Cure!!
I also offer Breast Thermography Imaging in Guelph, Ontario and some mobile locations. Check out more about thermography at www.thermographyclinichalton.com
